Did i scar my son for life?

My son was accused of shoplifting from a local convenience store. I subsequently pulled him out of school and began homeschooling. As a single father who works from home this was difficult to me. We began arguing constantly and I couldn't take it any more. This summer I sent him away to a military academy. Long story short: during a dangerous exercise (that the school was not allowed to conduct) my son was badly burned and has lost the use of both of his hands. He says that I'm a bad father for sending him there, but I disagree. I was right, wasn't I?
