What do I do if my videos that are in AVI format can't be played at Windows Media Player?

I have several videos that are in AVI format but it can't be played in Windows Media Player. I have tried changing the file types in WMP but it still doesn't work. I don't wanna use Quicktime though. Can anyone help me?!?!
